As a Union officer, a railroader, and a person who does not hide their identity I will answer this for you from experience.

Read my signature and then notice that NS nearly word for word adopted a similar disclaimer they request employees to post on social media.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT post anything that you would not say to anyone in front of anyone. Most of our companies have rules about conduct unbecoming and usually racism, pornography, or what could be considered slander can get you called to the carpet. Why risk it.

Do not post while on duty. It violates the CFR. Also remember cell phone pics on most phones document time and gps coordinates of when and where taken so do not use you camera phone while on duty and post it later as it can be traced by someone with a little skill.

Make your FB private and add a disclaimer that all postings are private, purely for entertainment and it is a violation of user terms to share any of your postings with others. Also note that if they disagree with your postings to un friend you and move on with life.

I think people put too much info on Facebook anyway. Some people damn near post when they have a bowel movement. Don't say anything online that you would'nt say in the shanty.

The railroad can fire you for talking bad about the company, they can justify this with the GCOR rule respect for rail company, in all honesty it is stupid to rant on facebook if your friends with a co worker, because it is public among your friends and their friends, they might be friends with other rails in the terminal who also might be friends with an official, A good example of this was in Minot, An engineer took a picture of her speedometer and posted it on facebook, another engineer replied to it while on duty, the company eventually found out and fired the two engineers and the conductor due to FRA violation, the conductor managed to return. Its not just the railroad Donald Trump sued a former beauty Padget contestant for 5 million dollars for slander because of a comment she posted on facebook, and dozens of other stories of people loosing their jobs because of what they post on facebook.

Railroads are excessively paranoid about the public finding out about what really goes on behind company gates-and justifyably so what with all the shenanigans they pull. There is also the worry about security and this has a lot more validity. Watch what you say.

I'll say this. I posted a pic, that was on his personal Facebook account, of another employee on Facebook and made a statement about him stepping up. Went to EEO with it. Was told by supervisors to take it down before it became an issue with EEO. Pathetic, and I did take it down.

This is simply not true. I dont hide who I am, and many others whether they like it or not easily give away who they are. I dont care who anyone on here is but I know who alot of people are (including high ranking company officials) but they are here for same reason I am. You cant come on here and bitch about train such and such at location such and such and not figure out who it is. Hell even if you bitch about a supervisor at a larger terminal you are only talking about a few hundred people in most cases in transportation and it dont take long to weed people out. Its not to say you cant share the truth, but dont think this is post whatever you want with no chance of recourse by the carrier. It has happened on NS (not to me) but I know to others it has.

As another poster said just dont post information that you would not discuss face to face with management. I also advise adopting a disclaimer such as I have and many members on here have adapted for their own tastes to add a layer of protection for free speach. Its actually funny that NS TV that is broadcast at many larger NS terminals actually advises to use a disclaimer and it is almost verbatum mine that I have used almost since the day I joined. Another forum member seen it and notified me of it.
