  • Region wise average stay of foreign tourists in London

It is obvious from published statistics that the average duration of stay with respect to nationals from South East Asia was 35.8 days in 1983 followed by Africa (32.7 days), North America (29.4 days), Australasia (29.4 days), South Asia (27.3 days), Western Europe (26 days), West Asia (25.9 days), Central and South America (22 days), Eastern Europe (21.3 days) and East Asia (17.4 days). If these visitors could be encouraged to spend more time in UK, the revenue to the government will be significant. More promotional activities are required to achieve the desired result.

On an average, while the Americans accounted for a stay of 28.9 days in 1983 as against 28 days in 1982, he visitors from Europe and Asia recorded a stay of 25.7 days and 27.5 days respectively in 1982. The increasing trend in average length of stay e.g. 26.7 days in 1982, 27.3 days in 1983 and 28.4 days in 1984, might suggest that most of these visitors are motivated by reasons other than just for leisure and pleasure. Recent studies have shown the relatives of immigrants in UK are a significant group of people travelling to and from the country.

4 Star Hotels in London mostly catered to the high end travelers and the medium budget visitors. The hotels in London with 5 star rating were beyond the reach of tourists with small and medium budgets. The expenses involved for a stay in one of the 5 star hotels in London for a single day was more than enough for 2 to 3 days stay in a 4 star hotel.

It is interesting to note that most of the 5 star hotels in London are host to only the high spending businessmen, visiting heads of state and the aristocratic class. Also the business meetings and other conferences were also held only in these hotels. Thus the 4 star hotels became very popular with people from Europe and other parts of the world. Even now, during the time of recession, these hotels are generating significant profits. While the decline in high profile visitors has affected the functioning of certain 5 star hotels, the 4 star and even the 3 star hotels are witnessing continuing demand for living spaces.
