  • New Version of YardLimits: Questions Problems Comments etc.

    Brothers & sisters,

The is a "Global Announcement" for ALL USERS to update you on the status of YardLimits.com
I've posted this notice in all the "major forums." (This notice will automatically disappear from this forum after one month.)

If you have any comments or questions, regarding the new forums or the service outage, please post a reply to this thread > Announcements > Website Questions, Changes, Problems, and Stats > New Version of YardLimits: Questions Problems Comments etc.

    Outages:
On July 20 we had a brief server outage & we were offline. On August 9, 2015, we again experienced problems with our server, resulting on us being offline. After a thorough examination by our technical team, it was determined we were experiencing reliability issues with our server. Since we were offline, the decision was made to move the site to another, stable server.

Between the time period of the 7/20 outage, and the 8/9 outage you may have noticed some of our files (documents uploaded to the download section,) and certain emoticons were missing. (Images / documents that were linked to an external site or that were attached to posts appear to still be functional.)

While the site was being moved to a new server, it was determined that malicious software had infected the site around July 20, which caused some of the files / documents uploaded to the “downloads section” to be lost. On behalf of all of us at YardLimits.com, I apologize for the inconveniences & this loss. We will begin to “re-upload” our files / documents to the “downloads section” as soon as possible.

    Enhancements / New Look:
In conjunction with the move to a new server, the technical team & owner consulted & agreed that while the site was down for a server move, the software that runs the forums should also be upgraded to the latest security standards & updates available. Without becoming overly technical, YardLimits.com has enjoyed the same custom interface in use on the forums for several years. The interface you have been accustomed to seeing when you log in to the forums and post messages was one of several custom built add-ons and plug-ins deployed by the previous owner. However, this custom user interface was not upgradable to the latest update of the forum software. Because of this incompatibility, we are no longer able to use the custom interface many of us are used to seeing. We all thought it was best to upgrade the site's stability and security and jettison the custom interface.

The new software has a few built in styles (or user interfaces) besides the default style you are seeing now when you log in to the forums. Currently, we have enabled two styles for you to choose from, "Grey Stripes" and "Default vB5 Style." We will probably enable more style choices in the future, once we have an opportunity to set them up. The style selector is a drop down menu at the bottom left of every page.

    Mobile Browsers:
This version of the bulletin software behaves a little differently when viewed from a MOBILE DEVICE (iPad, iPhone, smart-phone, tablet, etc.) than the previous version we are accustomed to using. You will notice the text boxes in which you post, reply, and quote other posts are smaller and lack text formatting & smile options. This is a temporary matter that the software developers are working to correct in future versions. If you post or reply on a PC, you should see icons at the top of the "post / reply box" that, when clicked, open the text formatting options & smiles, similar to the old version of the software. If you are familiar with BB Code, (changing of text fonts, color, bold, underline, etc.,) you can still manually insert such code in to your post or reply. Also, the height of the text box for post & reply is a fixed height when viewed from a mobile device. PC / desktop users should see the height of the box increase as they type longer messages.

    Posts while we were “offline”:
Some users by-passed the main landing screen to the forums which contained the “site maintenance” / “we'll be back soon” message during a period of time between when the forums were cleaned of malicious software & prior to out new debut on the new server. Some of those posts (any posts after 2015-09-23 at 02:40,) made while the “offline message” was active, were NOT carried forward to our new server. The reason for this is once we were able to identify & correct the issues, we were able to move forward with a clean working copy of the forum database software. Rather than take a chance on our preserved copy of the forums becoming again compromised, we have migrated the copy of the forums we know to be clean & secure.

I'll update you on any upcoming changes or planned outages that I know of in advance. However, we do not anticipate any further outages or issues at this time. We apologize for the duration of the outage & our absence, but things should be back to normal for the foreseeable future. It is my hope we can all enjoy the new forums and they will be stable & secure going forward.

I should also extend my thanks to our webmaster, Fillip, and our gracious owners, Gordon Elias & Seely LLP, for keeping the lights on around here & facilitating our upgrades.

Thank you to all our members for being a part of this online rail labor community (and thank you all for your patience!)

      Editing a comment
Correct on the emoticon thumbnails, as an example. The location path where those are stored is hard coded within the software to a URL like
      YardLimits.com/directory/smiley-things
"We" had to point the main YardLimits.com URL to the new server location, THEN "we" have to upload these to the new directory structure. The webmaster is aware of this & HOPEFULLY these will reappear within a few days. If that doesn't work, yours truly gets to go in & attempt to restore these things one by one.

Some people's AVATARs may not be displaying properly. Same scenario as I described for the smiles. If those files don't come across with the bulk upload to the directory & hard coded paths, then that's something else I get to do manually!

This is addressed in the Global Announcement, "Outages" paragraph. Please read that.

A user's reputation level. It accumulates by other users giving rep points for helpful posts and removing rep points for unhelpful/troll posts, but I don't see that option so it's likely not actually implemented. Users with more posts, longer join date, etc. will have more rep power.

TinZilard has it exactly right; thank you TinLizard. I'll check the settings and see if giving reputation points was overlooked & report back. The "reputation" levels were carried over / should have been carried over from the old version of the software, though the algorithm may have changed from version to version.
