And they say no weapons allow at work. Had a Conductor recently get in trouble over not watching a train by on the opposite side. They were stopped near the ghetto, and he told the officials that he would be on the other side of a moving train and if approached or attacked, what could he do. The officials response was "We've never had anything like that reported to have happened around here!"
Boils down to this. We run through all the rough areas of every town we run though. 90% of the yards are in the crap hole. In the event some crackhead decides to rob you, it's gonna be you or him! No officials are going to magically appear to rescue you. In the end, it's gonna be you taking care of #1! Nobody will do that for you. Better to be safe than sorry, and what they don't know won't hurt them. I'd rather be sitting in an investigation Monday then being buried Saturday! Moral of the story...I say, pack it if ya got it, OVER!

^ While I agree with you, I would not advertise that too much. Do what you need to within your legal rights in the state you live in, and hope it never comes down to using your uhh...... "privately supplied PPE"...

The company will blame the engineer for his own death because he was texting on duty.

Sad indeed. You never know who is lurking on train tracks though, so be careful.
When I was younger to get to my buddys house you had to walk about a mile up the tracks (dark territory, shortline used once a day.) I would carry a few of the biggest peices of ballast I could find in each hand at night. figured if someone starts comming at me if I can hit them with a few of them ful blast its a start on the fight/get away. Some bum chased my cousin when he was a kid on the same section of track with a knife. Got close enough to swipe at him and cut his back from shoulder blades to lower back. Luckily he was still able to get away and it wasnt super deep. Just goes to show you never know whats lurking out there untill you encounter it. Keep an eye out. Thoughts to this guys family. |

Then there is the terror threat. But rail management will never allow their "trained monkeys" (what they say guys, sorry) to carry because they hate us more than they hate crackheads or Al Quaida. This would have to come from Washington.

Had conductor get attacked several years back. Crew had stopped at an intermediate terminal to do some work. Shortly after departing the CO headed back to the second unit to "take care of business". After a while EN thought he had been gone too long. EN stopped the train and went back and checked and the CO was laying in the floor out cold with blood running down the side of his head.
I've walked up on people in my engines several times over the years. Wasn't sure who scared who more. Most times I went out one door and they went out the other. Now when I go back through my motors I take the flag stick with me and beat on the doors before I go in.

They’ve already made their decision, our bought-and-paid-for government would rather the company’s replace us with remote control.
