This is for everyone who is furloughed or on the edge being furloughed. First off let me say i've been there and i somewhat know what its like not to have a job or any money coming in, My experience was a bit different account i could travel to outpost jobs and still continue to work. Did it suck? Yes!! Would i rather had been home sleeping in my bed instead of a 12' pull behind camper? Without a doubt!! But i had bills to pay and i had to try and make a go of it. Its not gonna do any good to point fingers at the old heads and argue back and forth in this forum. Just about everyone who is working for NS is out here for the same reason, To make Money. I honestly feel for the 50 guys we have furloughed out of moberly account they had this smack them right in the face with little to no warning ( Old heads start to grumble) Most of these guys where trained by someone whom only had 2-3 years of experience and also never seen a furlough nor ever got the all important speech "When Your working your ass off in June thru Sept make sure you save some money back because you will be starving in Dec/jan" Secondly over the last few years whenever there was slow period the company was keeping guys working by calling extra switch engines adding brakeman to thru freight etc.. Those days are over.... Not to mention that Credit over the last 10 years has gotten extremely easy to get and i see numerous young guys who are driving Brand new pickups and living in Brand new homes, You couple that with no/little income and you have a recipe for disaster, and thats why this country is so screwed up right now. At least back in the 80's when you wanted to buy a New Car or especially a New home you had to have 20 percent or more down, which taught you the valuable lesson of saving etc... Most of the younger generation didnt get those lessons in life and now there gonna pay for it.

One of our engineers just retired at about 62. His answer, when asked when he was going to retire, was "That's none of your business." That reply is for each and every one of you in the under 60 crowd, who seem concerned about somebody's business, other than your own.

It just goes to show you the uncouth people that we work with and are surrounded by. Maybe they are helping an ill relative pay their bills. Maybe they are buying a townhouse in Florida, and need to work an extra 2 years to enjoy it. Maybe they have no life to retire to, since they worked their life away, so they might as well keep on trucking. Whatever the reason, as echoed above, "It is none of your damn business!". Privacy is one aspect we will never experience on the rails. Everyone knows what each other makes, how much they work, or don't work, when they are off, etc. I feel that just because we share the same employer, that doesn't give you the right to root around in my personal business. Don't get it fucked up! |

I just love when these kids try listing the reasons I'm still out here. Not one of the listed is the reason, but like most of em, they think they have all the answers.
Sadly they give all newbies a bad name, but hey whatever floats your boat. Personally I like the job, I don't like the BS. Most newbies are buffs, why else hire out here? Why did I? Cause its what everyone in the family did and most of the town. If you lived in the town I did, you hired on the railroad as soon as you graduated highschool or got out of the war. That bomb was directed at ENG who posted the BS about being a buff.. Its always the young ones that bitch. Hell, if we all retire how could you guys work? You wouldn't have anything to bitch about. |

One would think they'd rather be on a guaranteed extra list, instead of an unassigned pool with no guarantee, when things are slow. The biggest gripe seems to be, "But the pool is working good and I have bills to pay." Guess what? I have bills too, and if I get knocked off a regular job, you can bet I'll be taking the highest paying position my seniority will allow. That means there's two possible scenarios: 1. An unassigned train is changed to assigned service to replace the lost job, and the pool is adjusted downward accordingly. I keep my regular turn, and junior men from the general pool are displaced to the extra list. 2. Assigned train is lost, and affected senior employees exercise seniority to the general pool. Junior men from pool are displaced to the extra list. So why are all the junior men crying about being affected, when either way they're screwed? Duh! |

If I'm not mistaken, one of the factors used by the railroad to gauge the number of people to hire for a specific location, is that the people who are eligible to retire will retire and leave a vacancy to be filled. I personally don't think anyone or anything should sway an individuals right to determine when their time to retire is, but, don't blame the railroad for over hiring when all they wanted to do was replace you when you left, and you won't leave. :angel3: :angel3:
