One thing that is depressing as hell to see or hear is that someone died shortly after going on pension. They spent all that time out here contributing to the pension fund and then only collect for a year or so. Real shame. I just wanna get out and start collecting. I wish it was 30 and out. I'll have 30 at age 49. Only 18 more years insread of 29.

I hear ya rico, I guess this rr has a way of keeping you forever. But still, there is a whole lot better world out there beyond these rails and if you still have your health at retirement and you don't leave and take advantage of it, you're screwing yourself!! You only live once and even though I have had some good times in my short 5 yr career with this rr, none of them are keeping me longer than i have to stay. I do however appreciate the advice that all of the "oldheads" have but some still need to go.

Enough of this b.s. about "old heads should retire" or "old heads sold out the young guys."
The old heads have been through more furloughs than today's young guys will probably ever see in their careers. Seniority is everything on the railroad, and, if you don't like that, you can leave at any time. Yes, Mr. Newbie on the extraboard, you are your brother's keeper. You job is to protect vacancies when your senior brother is either unable to work or chooses not to work. Show some respect for your older brothers. The old heads have earned their seniority; now, go and earn yours. I'm not trying to be harsh, but I'm telling it like it is. The concept of seniority is preached to new hires from the very beginning, and I don't see what's so hard to understand about it. |

There, how's that sound?
I get tired of someone with 2- 3 yrs of seniority and alot less seniority age wise on the planet telling someone who's 60 to essentially pack up and leave because that 60 yr old employee is "preventing" that man with 3 yrs from making a living. Oh Boo-hoo. What sort of mollycoddled word do you 20-30 yr olds live in? Is it that you believe everyone should "get out of YOUR way" just because there's some sort of inconvieneince to you? Or maybe its' the "generation" gap, the old heads not wanting to leave the security of working, for the great unknown of social security and retirement in general. Everyones situation is different, some can leave, some can't, and some don't want to. Either way you slice it, it is a HUGE step(retirement), kinda like someone with 2-3 yrs of seniority "quitting" the railroad. So if you don't like it, QUIT. Stop bitching that everyone should step out of your way, and try living something through that 60 yr olds' eyes. Big step, they'll know when the times right, and there isn't no 2 yr wonder going to push them out the door they helped build. Now I truly don't wish layoffs upon anyone, and I'd venture to say that the balance of "old heads" on this forum and elsewhere feel the same, but get a grip on things bucko, the world don't revolve around YOU. |

OK, we been here threw this issue on about every railroad board we have here. It all boils down to the same sh&t. Seniority, those that have it work until they choose to retire, if and wheb they choose to retire. If they don't retire and die off before they retire thats more money left in the kitty for the newhires. BUT its still their life and their choice, newhires will get there if you hang around long enough.
