well i stole this idea for discussion from a facebook friends status as i thought it would make a great thread.

i was working a coal train on the old nickleplate between a power plant at coffeen illinois and sorrento illinois where we get back on the bnsf beardstown subdivision to take and get back on our brooklyn district. i was getting qualified on this run so i had the conductor and roadforeman on lead unit. the engineer had been back on second unit. luckily he had turned on a portable radio for a minute and heard what was going on. he came up and told us he thought our country was under attack. we were out of cell service range so we decided to listen to the am/fm radio to which the roadforemen objected. i flat out told him if we are being attacked we need to know what is going on. i will never forget the reports i listened to and the agony of not being able to contact my family or girlfriend as we were out of range. we had no idea what was going on and the railroads were at a standstill for a period of time just like the airlines.

I haven't been able to find any online articles yet, but a Shared Assets conductor was killed Thursday PM while working a local job in South Jersey. Information I have indicates he was crushed between cars on two adjoining tracks due to a close clearance. The conductor reportedly had between 2-3 years service. I know the engineer he was working with.

I had just gotten on my power at a yard in North Jersey and was preparing it to move when we were called on the radio, told to "stop what you're doing", and to go to a nearby building and contact the yardmaster. At that point we (and other crews) were given a briefing on the incident.

My condolences to this gentleman's family, his engineer (a former co-worker of mine), and all others involved/affected.

Political Forum Test Period - Act right or go away During the period September 06 through September 19, the Yardlimits' administrators will discuss and make a decision as to the implementation of a Current Events Forum, (political discussions allowed). That forum will, if allowed by a vote of the staff, be open for a 14 day test period. On September 19, our decision will be finalized, as to the allowance or not of a political discussion board. If the forum is approved, there will be firm rules and penalties. If our vote allows the test period for this forum, it will be open on September 20, 2010. The test period will run from September 20 through October 3, 2010. At that time, we will make a decision to keep that forum open or scrap it, depending upon the interactions of the posting members.

 CORN

Corn sales are expected to continue their decline from 2008’s high as the average annual price is expected to decline 33 cents per bushel. The 2010 corn crop is forecast to set new records for yield and total bushels, resulting in plentiful supplies. Annual use of corn for food, seed, and industrial purposes, as well as U.S. corn exports, is expected to increase starting in the latter part of 2010. Alcohol for fuel use is expected to increase 4.4 percent for the crop year starting in the latter part of 2010 after experiencing a 21.3 percent increase in the previous crop year. A slight increase is projected for the index of grain-consuming animal units (GCAU) beginning in the latter part of 2010 due to an increase in broiler production while grain used per GCAU is expected to decline. Several factors point to strong export demand for corn beginning in the latter part of the year: reduced availability of barley and low-price wheat, high domestic corn prices in China, and a dropoff in wheat production in the former Soviet Union. Reductions in wheat production mean less wheat is used as feed, boosting the demand for corn.

WHEAT

Sales of U.S. wheat are expected to decline over $1 billion in 2010. The annual average price for U.S. wheat is expected to fall 50 cents per bushel while quantities sold are expected to increase 0.2 percent. Prices are expected to be higher in the latter part of 2010 when over 60 percent of wheat is expected to be sold in the open market. The 2010 all wheat planted area is forecast down 9 percent from 2009. Total domestic use is expected to slightly rebound in the 2010 crop marketing year, while exports are expected to increase 36 percent.

SOYBEANS

Soybean sales in 2010 are expected to reach a record annual value. An 8.8-percent increase in soybeans sold will more than offset an expected decline of almost 70 cents per bushel in the U.S. annual average price. Farmers are expected to harvest a record amount of soybeans in 2010 with the U.S. average yield matching last year’s record. U.S. sales commitments for exports starting in the latter part of 2010 are ahead of the record set in 2009. Soybean oil use fell over the first half of 2010 as domestic use lagged last year’s demand because of low use for biodiesel, although edible consumption has grown slowly. Demand may overtake production in the latter part of 2010 if there is a strong recovery in U.S. biodiesel production prompted by the higher 2011 mandates in the Renewable Fuel Standard.
