MOBILE, AL - A railroad worker for The Alabama State Port Authority, was killed by a train Saturday, September 4, at the McDuffie Coal Terminal, located on the Mobile River at the Alabama State Docks. The McDuffie Coal Terminal is one of the nation’s leading facilities for coal exporting.

According to Port Authority CEO, Jimmy Lyons, the victim was a ground person on a train crew at the time of the accident. The victim had been in contact with a terminal railroad engineer in a locomotive that was moving train cars. When the engineer lost contact with the victim, the train was stopped.

The victim was later identified as 27 year old Joshua Roper. Alabama Port Authority officials said that Joshua Roper was a switchman for the Terminal Railway Division at the state docks.

“He was a fellow employee, but they don’t really want us to say because I don’t know anything you know. I don’t know the facts. I wasn’t here so, I was off work,” a co-worker said.

An investigation is underway as they try to piece together what happened early that evening. Raliroad officials have been unable to locate any witnesses who may have seen the accident.

“We are deeply saddened that this happened,” Lyons said.

Investigators from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) were en route, said Judy Adams, a Port Authority spokeswoman.

“That process was launched immediately,” Adams said.

Railroad operations at McDuffie Coal Terminal were shut down.

“Nothing’s been moved until we can get investigators on site,” Lyons said.

“We haven’t found anyone who actually saw the accident,” he said.

Lyons said there were no indications that the train violated any procedures.

A McDuffie Coal Terminal employee who was in the vicinity didn’t see what happened, according to Lyons.

“There was a lot of confusion initially. Details are still very sketchy. It’s going to take some time to piece together what happened,” he said.

Port Authority police, Mobile police and fire crews were also dispatched to the scene, officials said.

I do not believe they are hiring but I was wondering if anyone knew, for future reference, anything about the Minnesota Commerical as a place to work. Are they union or not and what is the wages for engineers and conductors? Also I know on some shortlines\regionals\switching operations on some days engineers will work in the engine on some\most days but can also be used as conductors. Does MNNR do this as well?

Any other pertinent info on MNNR would be appreciated as well.

Thanks!

CLINTON, UT – The driver of a pickup truck was killed when his vehicle collided with a FrontRunner passenger train in Clinton, Utah on Monday, August 9, 2010.

FrontRunner Commuter Rail Train

Clinton is in Davis County, Utah in the northern part of the sate, about 32 miles northwest of Salt Lake City, about 9 miles southwest of Ogden, about 69 miles northwest of Orem and about 74 miles northwest of Provo.

The fatal crash happened at 7:57 p.m. Monday night at the railway crossing in the 500 West block of 1800 North in Clinton, Utah. The accident occurred when the driver of the pickup truck was trying to cross the tracks and went around the barrier at the crossing and was struck by the oncoming train.

The victim was later identified as 52 year-old Charles Dubose from West Haven, UT. Dubose was the longtime owner of Charlie’s Service and RV Repair, an auto and RV shop in Sunset, Utah. Dubose was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a spokesman from the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) when the truck went around the crossing gates, the FrontRunner train slammed into the vehicle at top speed (about 79 miles an hour).

Some of the 18 passengers who were on the train were injured in the collision. One person was transported to a local hospital but most of the injuries were minor. No injuries to the train operator were reported.

Gerry Carpenter, a spokesman for the UTA, said that the train operator was visibly “shaken and upset” by the accident, but was otherwise uninjured. He has been put on paid administrative leave while a mandatory investigation into the crash is undertaken.

A child’s car seat was in the truck at the time of the accident, but authorities believe the victim was alone in the pickup truck at the time.

The pickup truck was moving eastbound on W 1800 North and the train was moving southbound when the crash occurred.

The train, which was traveling at about 79 m.p.h. at the time, had no time to slow down and then plowed into the pickup truck’s passenger side.

The impact of the collision pushed the pickup truck four blocks to the south. Wreckage from the pickup truck was spread out over the four block long area.

On Tuesday morning, FrontRunner traffic had resumed to normal.

The accident remains under investigation.
