Why are DIT (Dead-In-Transit) required to be within the rear 10 cars, or at least on the UP. Was dragging out a pickup and within the rear 10 cars of the pickup I saw a RSSX switch engine. After consulting with the higher ups, I had to shove all 38 cars back in, go unsecure the train, drag the whole train up and put the pick up on the rear end and rehang the EOT. Why does a dead engine need to be within the rear 10?

How did working for the railroad and your homelife mix back then. Before home computers, beepers, and cell phones how could you estimate when you would get called? How did you look up a lineup? I can only imagine what it was like not having other forms of communication than a housephone. Just trying to get a idea of how you went on with working for the railroad back during the "good times". I imagine quite a few things were missed back then.

Hi All,
not sure if this is the proper place to put this post but here goes...
I was wondering which, if any class 1's, will hire people as engineers. I am talking about someone who already has thier license and has worked for another class 1 as an engineer.

I know that CP does, or did, put out postings for those with previous experience as an engineer, but am wondering if any of the others (BNSF, UP, CN, CSX, NS) do? Or if you want to switch RR's (for whatever reason) do you have to start back as a condctor and work your way back to engineer?

I saw a tank car at the RIP track on a flat car that looked liked the sides had been sucked in. A buddy at the service track said it happened when it was being unloaded. Proper ventilation did not happen and it created a vacuum and caused the tank car to "vacuum" itself. That must be pretty powerful to do that to a iron tank car.

So how are things where you are? I myself have never seen it this bad. It has got something to do with the constant attacks management has been perpetrating this year; http://www.docstoc.com/docs/10576778...rk-Environment
I don't like to think so but it is possible we are passed the point of no return.
"At approximately 4AM, the Chesapeake and Albermarle rock job was northbound with approximately 40 empties. When it approached the open bascule draw span over the Intercoastal Waterway, the train was not able to stop. Instead, the lead engine collided with the counterweight and other parts of the bridge. The train was able to stop just as the front trucks went over the edge of the bridge approach and it came to rest with 1/3 of the lead engine hanging over the canal, resting on its fuel tank."
