NSdispatcher,

Maybe you could shed some light. I see a hell of a lot of emptys going both east and west, often same car company (DTTX, FEC, etc.) here on the Pitts. division (NS). Why do they do that ? We'll be on a train with 10 loads and 22 emptys going west and pass a train with 6 loads and 30 emptys going east. What's up with that ? Thanks.

Well each car is assigned to a different customer, all cars with the same lettering and TTX for example are owned by 1 company and leased to another therefore the cars are headed to different places to be loaded or unloaded.

Personaly I dont care if the ship all emptys east west north or south ! As long as I am on an engine watching them go by and not out the window of my car or house when i am laid off! Its probably top secret NASA stuff .....SPACE......

Ghost pretty much got it dead on here. Would also like to add that when many cars get empty they are automatically rebilled back to wherever they came from. For some instances you may see big johns passing empty big johns but some of them may had corn and other beans. Some custormers will load them again without cleaning them out if its the same product. Also alot of empty autoracks pass each other but some may have chains to tie down autos and some will have chaulks. Some autoplants load with one while others load on another.

All i Know is that we have 4 CTC controlled sidings between Seligman AZ and Needles CA and 3 of the 4 are blocked with bare tables... And the 4th has a unit train parked there. I don't think thats a good sign...

i can tell you for a fact when we had competent knowlegible clerks on our division and not cyo, many times they would rebill whole trains or blocks instead of sending a train from kcs to lafayette and a train from peru to kcs. they would simply rebill and magically whisk the cars to their desitination. same thing with crossyards of eastbound and westbound cars. now with the confused yard office good luck. the oldheads are still good but most of the new ones are worthless bodies.

on that note, i shoved my train out of ao smith in st louis last week, and then pulled north. cyo comes on and says big problem the scanner showed red and all the dangerous are out of place could we take a list. i said we would get back to him and since the conductor had a van he drove it and verified the list was perfect. what the dumb fuck in cyo did not look at was you shove out of the yard and go north, so the scan of the train is backwards had he even checked it at all he would have noticed that.

Alot of the problems down there is they dont get any training on when working a new desk. Point in case the clerk saw you train over the scanner and saw it backwards not realizing you would be going the other way. You can look at it two ways here. One he should of noticed that your engines were on the rear of the scan but in all honesty thats not what they are looking at when you train turns red for them. Number two, you can look at it as they are looking out for you. They are required to notify you as soon as possible to give you the postition of all dangerous cars that are not showing on your list. You cant fault them for actually trying to do their job. What gets me is when I hear crews talk to cyo over the radio and talk to them like there dirt, whats worse is when its a brand new conductor doing it. It actually sickens me to hear that and have no problem stepping in on the radio in the middle of the tongue lashing to see where the problem is.
