Default "He went into the school with a weapon and carried out a bloodbath,"

WINNENDEN, Germany – A 17-year-old gunman dressed in black opened fire at his former high school in southwestern Germany on Wednesday then fled in a hijacked car, killing at least 15 people before police shot him to death, state officials said.

The gunman entered the school in Winnenden and opened fire, shooting at random, police said. He killed nine students, three teachers and a passer-by outside the building, officials said.

"He went into the school with a weapon and carried out a bloodbath," said regional police chief Erwin Hetger. "I've never seen anything like this in my life."

Triggering a land and air manhunt, he hijacked a car, freed the passengers and drove about 25 miles (40 kilometers) before police found him. When confronted, he killed two bystanders in a shootout with police before he was slain, Baden Wuerttemburg governor Guenther Oettinger said. Two officers were seriously injured, but there was no immediate information on other casualties.

Four hours after the shootings began, police announced the teenager's death.

It was the nation's worst shooting since another teenage gunman killed 16 people and himself in another high school in 2002.

Concerned parents quickly swarmed the school, which was evacuated.

Police have have identified the gunman only as Tim K, who graduated last year from the school of about 1,000 students.

The German government was "deeply shocked and incensed about the appalling killing spree," Ulrich Wilhelm, a spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel, said in Berlin.

In 2002, 19-year-old Robert Steinhaeuser shot and killed 12 teachers, a secretary, two students and a police officer before turning his gun on himself in the Gutenberg high school in Erfurt, in eastern Germany.

Steinhaeuser, who had been expelled for forging a doctor's note, was a gun club member licensed to own weapons. The attack led Germany to raise the age for owning recreational firearms from 18 to 21.

I'm not much of a scholar in German law, but I'll bet this school was a gun-free zone.

It wasnt but a few years ago that the same thing happened in Germany. Kid killed quite a few teachers. Just goes to show that there are kids all over the world that just arent right. I think we will see more of this type thing, especially like whats happened in Alabama the last couple of days. The worst the country gets the more people that just dont give a crap and will just take people down with them.

clearly kids should be allowed to carry, beginning at kindergarten age. "a gun club member"-an otherwise responsible group's rogue member that did something stupid & brought about government intervention. hmmm, sounds familiar.

Default To add to what, im sure ,will turn into an irational debate....

Maybe if the teachers were armed, the kid would have known better than to attempt this or been shot down himself before he could rack up kills.

Oh hell.... I dont think we would find any sane or rational person that strongly defended the second amendment, even those willing to risk his life over it, that would not declare dirty bombs a bit over the line.

Dirty bombs and such are a bit different. I look at them as a wepon where your either planning a devistating strike. I see no personal self defense use for this. Only as an act of war.

my point is if someone wants to kill people, nothing will stop them.not even armed teachers. kids killing like this was unheard of when I went to school. it's more of a modern phenomenon. somewhere down the line something went bad wrong. what can we do as parents & educators to stop this insanity?

Well im a lot younger than you and I still remeber when this was unheard of. Yeah, schools were a shithole when I went; fighting, gangs, guns.... but no random killings of this magnitude.
As the generations have progresed, we have lost our children somehow. You remeber when art imitated life and not the other way around?

A a parent of three and seeing how the world has become, I am trying my damnedest to raise my kids beter than I was and I have seen other raised. I will not use the TV as a babysitter. I will atleast attempt to listen to and understand my kids (know what is going on in their lives). Kids do give tell tell signs when things are going wrong..... its up to us not to ignore it.
